This dwarf, broadly rounded evergreen produces a cool, variegated shrub covered in short, soft, white needle-like foliage that matures to a light green and has a tendency to blush pink over winter. This variety is best planted in shady, sheltered locations in evenly moist, well-drained, amended soil with a 2 inch layer of mulch. Providing year-round interest in shady, wooded sites, plant it near slopes, rock walls, and with Astilbe, Clethra, and bleeding hearts. Plant in well-drained, amended, acidic soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed, as this plant shapes itself nicely. When necessary, prune or shear in late winter to early spring. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with an acidic fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
