The traditional "thriller" Dracaena family consists of thin, long, lance-shaped leaves that produce a spikey, grass-like, tropical foliage plant. Spikes can be green, have burgundy margins, tricolored foliage, and may develop woody stems. 'Colorama' is one of the most coloful varieties, featuring red-tinted foliage that adds a rich decorative detail to any room. This plant removes harmful substances from the air and so is recognized as one of the air-purifying houseplants. They can be planted in the ground or in containers in any light condition, though direct sun should be avoided. Winter over or grown year round as a houseplant. Grow in sun to shady areas, well-drained, amended soil or containers. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, Osmocote? or Plant-tone?. Follow label instructions. Trim dry tips and remove yellow foliage as they shed their bottom leaves. Over winter or grow indoors as a houseplant if desired. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
