Flame Azalea is native to the eastern US including Ohio, found in woodland slopes with consistent moisture but good drainage. It features orange, possibly yellow to red flowers in May to June. Green foliage may burn in full sun, or crisp if the soil is allowed to dry. Acidify soil before planting as the shallow fibrous roots do not tolerate disturbance. Fall color is yellow to red. This species of azaleas prefer protected spots with some shade plus uniformly moist to wet soil but not prolonged standing water. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer and fall with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Wrap in burlap or spray with Wilt-stop to protect from winter desiccation.
