Daylilies are one of the most popular, easy-to-grow perennials producing long, slender stalks of multiple lilies, each opening for one day. As the plant matures, bud and flower counts increase, and the plant blooms over the course of several weeks. 'Frans Hals' is an popular bicolor variety that produces a yellow outer petals and reddish orange inner petals. Blooms mid- to late summer. The 4.5" flowers stand out well against the dark green, grass-like foliage. Plant in well-drained to moist, moderate to nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Remove spent flower stems before seed pods form for better blooming. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall every 4-6 years.
