Cucumber tree is native to Ohio, and is typically found in moist soils. This deciduous magnolia produces mildly fragrant, greenish-yellow, tulip-like flowers in May, followed by green warty seed cones that resemble cucumbers. These fruits mature to red in late summer, eventually letting red coated seeds dangle from threads when ripe. Cucumber tree is a straight-trunked tree 40-70' tall with a pyramidal shape. Trunks can reach 3-4 feet in diameter, with fluted grayish brown bark. Large yellow-green leaves turn a pleasant gold color in fall. Plant in well-drained to moist, acidic, amended soil.
