Low-growing, spreading iris native to woodlands including Ohio. Light blue, lavender or lilac flowers emerge in mid-spring above yellow-green leaves. Drought resistant unless in full sun. 'Powder Blue Giant' has very pale blue flowers. Combine with daisies, Coreopsis, Nepeta, and peonies. Plant in well-drained, average soil amended with compost or planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Apply a slow release fertilizer in spring and again midsummer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Keep the top of their rhizomes exposed and dry. Cut spent flower stems as low as possible. Divide in late summer to early fall every three years.
