A popular coral bell or alum root that produces a vigorous, mounding habit covered in fuzzy, maple-like leaves that change in color from yellow to peach-orange to amber with bright pink-purple undersides. Its tiny, cream, bell-like flowers barely reach above its foliage. This is a H. villosa hybrid, cross bred with a native coral bell, to make this variety more cold hardy, heat and humidity resistant, and more tolerant of various soil conditions. Plant coral bells in groups in woodland gardens for color and texture. Grow them in any sun exposure, but best used in part shade with bleeding hearts, ferns and cranesbills. Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1-inch of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back spent flower stems for a neat appearance. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Apply winter mulch to prevent root heaving. Divide in spring or fall when necessary. Propagation prohibited.
