Barrenwort are fantastic shade plants, tolerant of dry, shady areas under trees. They make excellent groundcovers and edging plants for a woodland garden path. Colchian Barrenwort produces sprays of dainty "bishop's cap" flowers in bright yellow in spring over a bushy mound of dark green heart-shaped foliage. This is a tough, reliable plant once established. Plant with other woodland perennials including ferns, bleeding hearts, and Pulmonaria. Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
