Cinnamon Fern 1 Gallon

Cinnamon Fern 1 Gallon

Osmundastrum cinnamomeum; Osmunda cinnamomea

A native fern of Ohio easily identified by its prominent, cinnamon-colored spore or fertile fronds standing in the center of its feathery, sterile, light green fronds. During the growing season this slow to establish but long-lived, clump-forming deciduous fern is a lovely, vase shaped specimen providing two distinctive leaf textures, beautiful golden to orange fall foliage, and is great for moist to wet areas along ponds, in rain gardens, and deeply shaded borders. Also, wonderfully tolerant of deer and rabbits, black walnut trees, and full sun as long as it is growing in continuously wet soil. Place ferns in containers or grow in the shade garden with Hosta, bleeding heart and Astilbe. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
