Opuntia Cacti are a popular part of the succulent family, identified by their cushioned growth points, called areoles, where their infamous spines are produced! The many varieties, shapes, and colors of cacti provides a practically foolproof plant that grows well in sunny containers or rock garden beds. Also known as Nopal Cactus or Paddle Cactus, 'Prickly Pear' is identified by its wide, flat, branching pads covered in spines. Some spines are large and round while others are more like tiny, hair-like barbs that will detach from the plant upon contact. The paddles do produce colorful flowers that will cheer up a space. Plant in extremely well-draining soil. Grows well in Full Sun. Pruning is not necessary but may be done to maintain shape and size. If pruning, use tongs to hold the pads and a clean, sharp knife to cut them off at the joint or where it connects to the next pad.
