This strikingly sculptural, medium-sized evergreen conifer has an irregular crown and short trunk. Its stout, sharply pointed needles are dark green and twisted. Best used as a specimen, in woodland gardens or group plantings. Prefers well-drained, rocky soil, and can become drought tolerant once established. Plant in well-drained, amended, acidic soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed, as this plant shapes itself nicely. You may remove dead branches any time. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with an acidic fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
