An improved 'Packman' type broccoli that produces high quality, large, 6-8" wide domed crowns early season with deep green florets that possess an excellent, fresh flavor. 'Lieutenant' possesses good heat tolerance and wide adaptability for garden beds or container growing. Eat or prepare straight from the garden or store in the freezer; it's excellent for salads and steamed dishes . This fantastic cold crop produces best in the cool spring or fall weather. Grow with other cold crops such as cabbage, kale, sage, rosemary, and the onion family. Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, following label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
