Black gum, tupelo, or sour gum trees prefer moist water and will tolerate standing water. It tolerates some drought. Inconspicuous white flowers are prized by bees and other pollinators, and small black fruit may appear in the fall, attracting birds. Fall color is impressive scarlet. 'Zydeco Twist' has a twisted and contoerted habit that gives an unusual appearance.
