Black gum, tupelo, or sour gum trees prefer moist water and will tolerate standing water. It tolerates some drought. Inconspicuous white flowers are prized by bees and other pollinators, and small black fruit may appear in the fall, attracting birds. Fall color is impressive scarlet. 'Wildfire' new foliage is redder than the species and fall color adds yellow orange to scarlet. Small branches are tinged red.
