Astilbe chinensis Also known as False Spirea, Astilbe is a staple for any dappled shade border or woodland garden. A great choice for any gardener wanting to achieve color and texture in shady areas where other flowers won't thrive. 'Dark Side of the Moon' is the only dark-leafed variety with purple flowers on the market! Its rich, deep chocolate, burgundy leaves form an attractive mound of foliage from which dark stems emerge to bloom with rosy purple flowers midsummer to late summer. Water well after planting, and maintain 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Do not let them dry out. Use an all-purpose, slow-release maintenance fertilizer in spring or at planting, and repeat in summer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring every 3-4 years, after cutting back the foliage.
