An Ohio native, deciduous, woody vine that develops drooping, 6-inch long, fragrant, showy lilac-purple blooms (racemes) that attract pollinators in spring as its deep green foliage flushes out. After flowering, 5-inch long, smooth seed pods form. Flowering may take time, typically three or more years. Grow on sturdy support structures, arbors, railings, in containers, or on other tree trunks surrounded by shrub roses, daisies and other cottage garden perennials. American wisteria is not as aggressive as Asian types, but still requires regular training and pruning. Prefers well-drained, moist, slightly acidic soil, but tolerates drought and possesses good deer resistance.
