American Bittersweet is a woody deciduous twining vine. This plant is primarily grown for the bright red berries which are prominent in fall and winter. Berry-covered branches are traditionally used as decoration. Plants are either male or female; only females will produce berries in the presence of at least one male for every 6 to 8 female plants. The vine can be alowed to trail on the ground or climb a fence or other structure. Avoid growing on trees or shrubs as they may strangle the support plant.
