Alocasia sanderiana Also known as Elephant Ears and African Mask, Alocasia features stunning foliage and a fast growth rate. Grown well in large containers, they thrive outdoors during the summertime and should be transitioned indoors for the winter. During the warm growing season, a new leaf is produced every week, and each new leaf may very well be twice the size of the last! Leaves vary from slim arrowheads to wide, heart-like shapes with colorful veins and thick, waxy, slick, glossy texture. During the fall-winter dormancy period, the plant rest and leaf growth diminishes yet remains as-is. Rapid growth naturally returns the subsequent growing season. Plant in loose, well-drained potting mix. Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again, as the plant prefers even moisture but soggy conditions will cause fungal infection. Less water is needed during dormancy. As tropical plants, Alocasia will suffer is temperatures dip below 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
