Thuja plicata A unique, dwarf evergreen that develops a rounded, shrubby habit covered with soft needled, drooping sprays of whipcord-like glossy green foliage that turns bronze green in winter for fantastic year-round interest. This is a very slow grower, maturing to 2-3' tall after 10 years. Use as an easy foundation plant, specimen, or in a rock garden tolerant of clay soil. Plant with spirea, roses, barberry and ornamental grasses. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed, as this plant shapes itself nicely. Prune in early spring before new growth as needed. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with a slow-release fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
