'Nigra' or dark green arborvitae is an attractive evergreen that has a strong, natural pyramidal shape, broad at the base and tapering to the top. Fan-shaped leaflets are deep green and highly textured. This variety makes one of the finest year-round tall hedges; perfect for wind breaks and natural screening. A cultivated variety of the Ohio native, Eastern Arborvitae. Combine with spirea, roses, barberry, and ornamental grasses. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Little pruning is needed, as this plant shapes itself nicely. You may remove dead branches any time. When necessary, prune or shear in late winter to early spring. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with a slow-release fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Tie up or burlap in winter to reduce snow and ice damage on branches.
