Showy, deep red-orange, single flowers up to 2.5 inches in diameter are displayed nicely against the glossy, dark evergreen leaves on this plant. 'Girard's Scarlet' is also naturally well-shaped and compact with good winter color. This plant is great for mass planting, foundations, and borders with Pieris and Viburnum as companions. Azaleas prefer protected spots with some shade plus well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune in spring immediately after flowering to control size, and remove stray shoots or damaged limbs anytime. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer and fall with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Wrap in burlap or spray with Wilt-stop to protect from winter desiccation.
