Heuchera spp. Coral Bells, or Alum Root, are truly eye-catching foliage plants, and newer varieties have been improved by cross breeding with the native H. villosa to make them very cold hardy, heat resistant, and tolerant of various soil conditions. 'Plum Pudding' is a variety offering shimmering, plum-purple foliage with metallic silver highlights on a tight mound. Pairs well with Astilbe, Hosta, Lenten Rose, Daylily, and Painted Fern. Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back spent flower stems for a neat appearance. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
