A semi-evergreen fern from eastern Asia that produces a compact, vase shaped habit with shiny, deep green fronds and bristles on the stems. Showy tassels form on the new, emerging fronds. In general, ferns provide excellent shade garden color and texture along with deer and rabbit resistance. Place ferns in containers or grow in the shade garden with Hosta, bleeding heart and Astilbe. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
