Royal Fern is a native fern of Ohio often found along streams and riverbanks, sometimes even in the water. Perfect for rain gardens. The fronds are broad but open and lacy. Turn yellow to brown in the fall. Place ferns in containers or grow in the shade garden with Hosta, bleeding heart and Astilbe. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
