One of the largest native ferns, this strong, upright, broadly vase shaped species has rich green, deeply cut, feathery, sterile fronds on the outside and fertile, shorter, brown fronds on the inside. 'The King' is up to 50% larger than the species. It slowly spreads by clump forming rhizomes. Fronds can be clipped and arranged or planted among bleeding hearts, Brunnera and Ligularia. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Excellent shade garden color and texture.
