Dryopteris filix-mas

This large, arching fern possesses 3' long, medium green fronds with finely serrated leaflets. 'Robusta' grows larger than the species, and fronds have a ruffled or wavy look. Combine with coral bells and Hosta. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Excellent shade garden color and texture.
