Dixie Wood Fern 1 Gallon

Dryopteris australis

This tough, naturally occurring hybrid fern is native to the Southeastern U.S., but very cold tolerant and a great grower in NE Ohio. It produces tall, slender, arching, semi-evergreen fronds that are glossy, dark green turning bronze in the fall. Use this versatile vase shaped fern in part to deep shade, dry soil under trees or wet soils near ponds and river banks or in rain gardens. Combine with coral bells and Hosta. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Excellent woodland garden color and texture.
