This shade loving fern is actually most attractive in the spring as its new fiddles unfurl into coppery-pink and peachy-bronze fronds. Mature fronds turn deep, glossy green with russet-red sori underneath in fall, hence autumn fern. The changing foliage color is extremely eye catching in the shade garden along with coral bells and Hosta. Plant in evenly moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Excellent shade garden color and texture.
