Sweet William Barbarini® Picotee Purple Market Basket
Dianthus barbatus
Sweet William is a classic, biennial (two year life cycle) dianthus species that typically produces low-growing mounds of lush, bright green foliage and highly fragrant, showy clusters of single flowers in shades of white, pink, red, and violet with fringed or picotee petals. Sweet William make for wonderful cut flowers, showy edging and groundcover plants in cottage gardens and at the base of roses, or near other, taller perennials such as Nepeta, Salvia, and Sedum. This variety displays showy clusters of single flowers late spring into summer comprised of magenta-purple petals with a white picotee edge. Plant in well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week, for the first year. Deadhead or shear, and fertilize, to encourage new blooms. Let flowers self-seed or collect and sow seed in late summer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
