Carnation 'King of the Blacks' Quart

Carnation 'King of the Blacks' Quart

Dianthus spp.

Also known as Pinks, perennial dianthus plants typically produce low-growing mounds of silvery-blue, grass-like foliage and single/double flowers with fringed or spotted petals. Some newer varieties are extremely fragrant and will bloom repeatedly throughout the growing season. Pinks make for wonderful edging and groundcover plants in rock gardens and at the base of roses, or near other, taller perennials. 'King of the Blacks' is a carnation variety that offers loosely tufted, clove-scented, dark burgundy red, double flowers up to 2" across from late spring to mid summer. Plant in well-drained, alkaline soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week, for the first year. Deadhead or shear, and fertilize, to encourage new blooms. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
