'Splendens' is an award winning variety of the classic tiger lily. It produces showy, fragrant, 5 to 6 inch wide, nodding, deep orange flowers with distinctive black speckles and recurved petals in late summer into early fall. These lilies are tall and graceful, useful as showy specimen plants in the middle border of the landscape or cutting garden. They develop from very cold hardy, scaly bulbs producing thick, sturdy stems, short narrow leaves and topped with up to 25 buds. They work best in a sunny landscape, cutting or Asian themed gardens, in containers, and also attract pollinators. Combine with peonies, Dianthus, yarrow, and Coreopsis. Plant in well-drained, average soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Use Bulb-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
