'After Eight' is a dwarf Oriental or Stargazer lily variety from the Lily Looks series developed in the Netherlands. It produces highly fragrant, colorful, up to out facing, deep rose flowers with red freckles and white wavy margins that were originally bred for container gardens, but its versatility and dwarf habit makes it useful in the front border of the landscape or cutting garden too. Oriental Lilies are hybrids, bred from many different species of lilies. They develop from cold hardy, scaly bulbs producing thick, sturdy stems, lance-shaped leaves and topped with large, 6 to 8 inch wide, up to outward facing, trumpet-shaped blooms in mid to late summer. Oriental lilies are strongly scented, and bloom later than Asiatic lilies, have a wide range of habits, and produce gorgeous flowers with curled petals, freckles and stripes. They work best in a sunny landscape, cutting or Asian themed gardens, in containers, and also attract pollinators. Combine with peonies, Dianthus, yarrow, and Coreopsis. Plant in well-drained, average soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Use Bulb-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
