This is the reddish to maroon leaf version of Cos or Romaine lettuce. It produces long, broad, upright leaves with firm ribs in shades of light green to deep maroon that bunch together as they mature. Their hearts and their outer leaves are used in Caesar salads, for wraps, and are delicious grilled! Generally, Romaine lettuce is crisp, juicy, and sweeter than other lettuce types. companion to carrots, radishes, strawberries, cucumbers, and beans. Plant in sunny, well-drained, nutrient rich soil or containers amended with organic matter. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week throughout the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertilizer, following label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
