Tussock sedge is an evergreen, native sedge grows in dense clusters of narrow bluish grass-like leaves, surrounded by mats of brown foliage from previous seasons. Best grown in standing water, low spots, or water edges where it forms clumps. In drier locations, it may spread aggressively by rhizomes. Makes a good pollinator (caterpillar) host plant and useful to birds building nests. Plant with perennial Astilbe, Brunnera, Coral Bells, and Golden Moneywort. Divide in spring. Plant in moist to well-drained, average to rich soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter.
