This Japanese silver grass or maiden grass variety is an improved version of M. 'Variegatus' featuring an upright, vase to arching habit filled with long, strap-like, variegated green leaves boldly striped in creamy white running the length of its foliage. Its showy, rose-red, whisk-like plumes emerge early fall and fade to silver in winter. Ornamental grasses provide attractive and durable garden accents, three seasons of interest, and make wonderful cut foliage and flowers for arranging. Combine with Perovskia, Rudbeckia and Joe-Pye weed for an easy-care, sunny landscape border. Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting, maintaining 1-inch of water, once per week, for the first year. Feed in spring or at the time of planting. Cut back as low as possible late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
