Also known as Japanese Silver Grass, this is one of the most popular ornamental grass families with many shapes, sizes, colors, and varieties to choose from. Maiden Grass can be identified by its whisk-like inflorescence that is produced in late summer to late autumn. Clumps form very dense, mounded to upright to arching habits that make excellent garden specimens, hedges, and they can be used for cut and dried flower arrangements. 'Adagio' is a variety that produces silvery green foliage wiht bronze-pink to white plumes late summer and into winter. Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting, maintaining 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Feed in spring or at the time of planting. Cut back as low as possible late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
