Peach 'Elberta' 5 Gallon

Peach 'Elberta' 5 Gallon

Prunus persica 'Elberta'

All fruit trees require full sun and produce better yields with the addition of a compatible variety of fruit tree for pollination. 'Elberta' is a compact, yet vigorous grower and a steadily productive peach tree that features medium to large, yellow to blushing, crimson-skinned fruit on the outside. On the inside, the fruit is yellow and sweet with a touch of tartness, and it is a juicy freestone, meaning the fruit falls easily right off the pit. 'Elberta' blooms pink flowers in spring, ripens from late July to August, and bears higher yields as it matures from 3 to 8 years old. This peach is self-fertile, but it's a better producer when planted in multiples, especially with 'Redhaven'. Excellent multipurpose variety for eating fresh, canning, and making jam; introduced in the late 1800's from Macon County, Georgia. Plant in well-drained, nutrient rich, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune in late winter to control size and form or after flowering. Remove dead or damaged stems at any time. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. A regular spraying schedule to reduce insects and disease is recommended.
