Ninebark is a fast-growing, tough, upright-rounded shrub native to Ohio. It is named for exfoliating brown bark visible in winter, making it a year-round beauty. Foliage is green with yellow fall color. Pinkish white flower clusters attractive to butterflies appear in summer, followed by reddish fruits. This native is adaptable to most soil conditions and durable in its uses as a natural screen, hedge, foundation plant and pollinator attractant. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune after blooming. Remove older stems from the base to keep plant attractive. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
