Euonymus alatus 'Compactus'

This shrub is recognized for its specatcular fall foliage and ornaments berries. 'Compactus' is a compact, medium-sized, spreading, deciduous shrub that displays rich green leaves spring through summer. In fall, the foliage turns an impressive scarlet red before shedding to the ground. Also in fall, its fruit capsules split open to reveal orange-coated seeds that hang on well into winter and are attractive to some species of bird. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1? of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Remove dead branches or trunk suckers any time. Heavy pruning should be performed late winter/early spring, no more than 1/2 of the plant?s height in one season. Feed at least twice during the growing season with a slow release fertilizer in early spring and again mid-summer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2? to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
