A large, broad, native, deciduous shrub that produces crimson red new foliage that fades to green in midsummer, fading to purple in autumn, and then bright red in winter. Tiny, fragrant, white flowers appear in flat clusters in summer attracting pollinators, followed by black fruits that attract birds. Fall color is minimal with color fading until leaf drop. Tolerant of moist soils, excellent in rain gardens or used for erosion control. Combine with other natives such as deciduous holly, Panicum grasses, and Rudbeckia.
