Snow In Summer Market Basket

Snow In Summer Market Basket

Cerastium tomentosum

Aka Snow in Summer, is a beautiful, perennial groundcover with fuzzy, narrow, silver foliage (6 inches tall) that is topped with pure white flowers (8-12 inches tall) in late spring to early summer forming a soft, mounding to spreading habit. This plant is best suited for well-drained, sunny to dry areas and rock gardens. If the soil is too wet, it will yellow and suffer from root rot. It is also very cold tolerant, and prefers northern climates and cooler summer temperatures. In containers, it serves well as a lovely trailing "spiller". Combines well with Sedum, Dianthus, and other rock garden species. Plant in well-drained, dry to average soil amended with organic matter. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Use slow-release fertilizer in spring or at planting, and again in summer. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary. Cut flowers back to reduce seed production and further spreading.
