Common Milkweed 1 Gallon

Common Milkweed 1 Gallon

Asclepias syriaca
This native, herbaceous perennial named for Asklepiois, the Greek god of medicine, this plant naturally occurs in fields, open woods, and along roadsides and railroad tracks. It typically grows upright stems with thick, broad leaves and fragrant, pink-purple flowers that appear over a long bloom period from late spring through summer. These flowers are a fantastic source of nectar for many butterflies and the leaves are a critical source of food for Monarch Butterfly larvae caterpillars. When cut, the stems and leaves exude a milky sap. Eventually, flowers give way to promiment seed pods that split when ripe to release silky-tailed seeds that are then dispersed by the wind.
