Perovskia atriplicifolia One of the most reliable perennials in the garden, this award-winning plant (Perennial of the Year, 1995) offers silvery-white stems and grey-green, dissected foliage that deer find to be extremely pungent. Midsummer, electric blue to lavender flower spikes develop and continue to show color well into late fall. It acts as a pollinator magnet in late summer. Though delicate looking, this plant is tough as nails in that it's resistant to drought, heat, pest, and poor soils. Pairs well with Coneflower, Helenium, and Grasses. Plant in well-drained, average to rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back to 6" in early spring. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring when necessary.
