Rudbeckia fulgida Unlike many Black-Eyed Susans, this hybridized variety thrives in wet, humid climates. It offers fuzzy, disease-resistant leaves that are covered summer to fall frost in masses of classic, gold-and-black blooms. This variety is an herbaceous perennial with a compact, rounded form that works well in sunny gardens. Plant in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter. Water well after planting, and maintain 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Fertilize in spring. Deadhead spent flower stems for neat appearance. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary. In fall, let seeds self sow. In spring, cut back to where new, developing, fresh green growth is emerging.
