Flame grass begins the growing season in a stick-straight, upright growing clump of medium green, grassy foliage. It begins its stunning color show in mid-August with maroon hues heating up to a reddish-orange as the season progresses topped with feathery, silver, whisk-like seed heads. The burgundy foliage and creamy plumes hang on well into winter to create gorgeous wintertime interest. Perfect as a specimen plant, a natural screen, in large containers, or at the pond's edge. Combine with Perovskia, Rudbeckia and Joe-Pye Weed for a beautiful, sunny landscape border. Plant in well-drained, average to poor soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter. Divide in spring when necessary.
