Miscanthus sinensis

One of the most popular ornamental grass families, Japanese Silver Grass, or Miscanthus, is identified by its whisk-like inflorescence produced late summer to late fall. Clumps form dense habits that make for an excellent garden specimen, hedge, and for cut or dried flower arrangements. Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient-rich soil. 'Fire Dragon' is an improved variety of 'Purpurascens' with stronger upright to arching habit, medium green foliage that develops reliable, striking fall colors in shades of bright orange, red and burgundy with abundant silver-white, sterile, inflorescences forming July-October. Ornamental grasses make wonderful landscape borders, provide winter interest, and are very deer resistant. Combine with Perovskia, Rudbeckia and Joe-Pye Weed. Plant in well-drained, average to poor soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter. Divide in spring when necessary.
