Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus'

This is a variegated Japanese Silver or Maiden Grass with graceful upright, arching leaves that are boldly white striped down the length of the deep green foliage. It produces beautiful copper-tan plumes above the foliage in fall. Ornamental grasses are best used as deer and rabbit resistant screens or specimens, in mixed shrub borders, or as a back drop for colorful perennials such as coneflowers, Nepeta, and Sedum. It provides good winter interest in the landscape, but may require staking. Plant in well-drained, average to poor soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter. Divide in spring when necessary.
