Japanese Forest Grass is a shade tolerant ornamental grass that resembles a low-growing, cascading bamboo. Hakonechloa grasses make excellent spillers in containers, as Asian garden accents, and they're useful for creating highlights in a woodland area. These grasses pair particularly well with ferns, coral bells, and astilbe. The award-winning 'Aureola' variety offers bright green striped variegation over brilliant yellow foliage in part shade, taking on a lime-green color if planted in full shade. Divide in spring. Plant in moist to well-drained, average to rich soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. In general, cut ornamental grasses down as low as possible in late winter.
