Pennisetum spp. Fountain Grass produces compact, dense, mounded varieties that are popular, reliable, and easily recognized by their cat-tail or bottle brush-like blooms over finely textured, arching foliage. They are perfect for sunny containers, small spaces, and in the front or middle borders. 'Hameln' is a small variety that emerges green, then turns rust gold in autumn, and pale blonde in winter. The tops of leaves are tipped with soft, wheat-shaped seed heads. Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting, maintaining 1" of water, once per week, for the first year. Feed each spring or at the time of planting. Cut back as low as possible in late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
