Calamagrostis acutiflora Feather Reed grasses are an early blooming, clay soil-tolerant family perfect for smaller gardens but also large landscapes needing a slender, upright grass. They have a dense, clumping habit and come in green to striped foliage varieties. These plants are distinguished by wheat-like panicle flowers that begin a soft pink and then fade to a straw color as they persist into fall and through winter. 'Overdam' offers beautiful foliage with yellow margins that boast feathery plumes in the summer which then evolve to a rich gold color in the fall.Tolerant of moist to wet soils, make excellent specimen and hedges. Plant in sunny, well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Cut back as low as possible late winter/early spring. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
